FAQs - booking Germany flights

  • Are there nonstop flights to Germany?

Frankfurt Airport is one of the busiest airports in Europe and is the main hub of German airline Lufthansa. You can find nonstop flights to Frankfurt from 6 major airports in Canada, including Halifax Stanfield (YHZ), Ottawa (YOW) and Calgary (YYC). Direct flights to Germany are operated by Lufthansa, Air Canada and Condor. Lufthansa also flies nonstop from Toronto Pearson International Airport to both Munich Airport (MUC) and Berlin-Tegel Airport (TXL).

  • Where should I fly to within Germany?

Many German cities have their own airports and you might need more than one flight to travel to different regions. Due to its size and international connections, you may find that the best airport to fly into is Frankfurt Airport. Frankfurt am Main is located in central Germany so it can be a great starting point if you wish to travel across the country. Travellers focusing on the northern part of Germany might find cheap flights to Hamburg Airport (HAM), Berlin-Tegel (TXL) or Berlin-Schonefeld (SXF).

  • I want to rent a car in Germany. Should I bring my own car seat?

In Germany, child car seats must be approved according to European safety regulations. If your car seat is UN R44/R129 approved, you can use it in Germany. If this is not the case, you should get an appropriate car seat from your car rental company. Be aware that car seats are required for all children up to the age of 12 or less than 150 cm tall.

  • Which airport is closest to the Bavarian Alps?

If you want to travel to the Bavarian Alps, Munich Airport might be the most convenient entry point when travelling from North America. Munich Airport is approximately 200 km north of the Alps and the drive by car takes approximately 3h. However, if you are flying in from another German airport such as Frankfurt, consider flying into Innsbruck Airport (INN). This airport is located in Austria close to the German border and you can reach the Bavarian Alps within 1h by car. As both countries are members of the Schengen Area, you can move freely across the border.

  • Will I need to obtain a visa to travel from Canada to Germany?

Although Canadian citizens will need to have a regular Canadian passport that is valid for at least three months beyond the day they plan on leaving Germany to travel to this country, there is no need for these passengers to obtain a visa to travel to Germany so long as they don't plan on staying for more than 90 days in the country within any 180 day period.

  • If my final destination is the southwest part of Germany, are there any other airport options outside of the country?

Since there are no large international airports in this part of the country, a quite popular alternate destination is to fly to the Luxembourg Airport (LUX) in neighbouring Luxenberg. You can find one-stop flights to this airport from cities in Canada such as Calgary, Vancouver, Toronto, and Montreal.

  • How does KAYAK find such low prices on flights from Canada to Germany?

KAYAK is a travel search engine. That means we look across the web to find the best prices we can find for our users. With over 2 billion flight queries processed yearly, we are able to display a variety of prices and options on flights from Canada to Germany.

  • How does KAYAK's flight Price Forecast tool help me choose the right time to buy my flight ticket from Canada to Germany?

KAYAK’s flight Price Forecast tool uses historical data to determine whether the price for a flight from Canada to Germany is likely to change within 7 days, so travellers know whether to wait or book now.

  • What is the Hacker Fare option on flights from Canada to Germany?

Hacker Fares allow you to combine one-way tickets in order to save you money over a traditional round-trip ticket. You could then fly from Canada to Germany with an airline and back with another airline.

  • What is KAYAK's "flexible dates" feature and why should I care when looking for a flight from Canada to Germany?

Sometimes travel dates aren't set in stone. If your preferred travel dates have some wiggle room, flexible dates will show you all the options when flying from Canada to Germany up to 3 days before/after your preferred dates. You can then pick the flights that suit you best.

There are a huge selection of cities in Canada that offer one-stop flights to this airport, including major cities such as Vancouver in Montreal, plus there are nonstop flights available from Toronto Pearson International Airport (YYZ).
  • If you plan on travelling to Germany for the huge celebration called Oktoberfest, it is important to book your tickets as far in advance as possible as the cost of flights to popular festival cities such as Munich, Berlin, and Stuttgart can really begin to increase as October approaches, and the availability of seats can also dramatically diminish.
  • Travellers looking for the airlines with the most direct flights from Canada to Germany should consider flights on each of these countries' national airlines. That means that when you search on KAYAK, you should look for flights aboard both Air Canada and Lufthansa.

I appreciate that KLM was proactive in informing me of the 2 hour delay which enabled me to replan my travel. It was a bit stressful not knowing whether my connection from Montreal to Ottawa was happening. But the ground and air crew did a good job at comforting and assuring me.

Cabin crew professional, polite and friendly, boarding was seemless, but come on KLM surely you can do better than a pack of cheesy biscuits as an inflight snack

Legroom not all it could be, especially when the seat in front is reclined. Otherwise it was good, food and beverage were nice.

Overall very positive. Boarding was quick and organized. Cabin was clean and seats were reasonably comfortable. Cabin crew was excellent and the meals provided were also of good quality

This fight left ahead of time which meant it arrived early which was great. Staff were very professional, but as with all these Short hop Flights the food was a disappointing snack There was no entertainment on this flight, but I did not expect any

I flew premium economy and this was a good option. Although the seats didn’t recline much, I was able to get some sleep with my head propped against the window. The food was good and the entertainment was wonderful The staff were very attentive and professional

Overall very poor. Flight was disorganised, staff were rude and this is my second experience with KLM that I've had baggage go missing. It feels like, if you are an economy customer, KLM staff do not show you any care. I shall never fly with KLM again. Worst airline in Europe

Great boarding, great short flight but no entertainment whatsoever and no wifi. Prepare to disembark by a staircase.

Great boarding, great short flight but no entertainment whatsoever. It was supposed to have wifi but that did not work.

Transfer at CDG to connecting KLM flight to Amsterdam was a NIGHTMARE. LONG WALKWAYS, NO MOVING WALKWAYS, POOR signage, Have to take a train & No staff visible to help navigate the maze. AVOID TRANSFER AT CDG AT ALL COST.

My husband required a wheelchair to get to the airplane and the service he received was exemplary. Thank you.

Internet on both flights was sketchy. Thus in flight entertainment was non- existent on MN - Balrimote leg.

crew was great, wifi was very poor could not even load a youtube video

WestJet was able to re-book us to the next available flight at no charge when air traffic controller staffing shortage delayed our inbound flight

Our flight was delayed for almost 2 hours resulting in a rush to connect to our next flight

I am a tall woman and could not move my legs enough to reach down under the seat in front of me to retrieve anything I put down there. I sat in both aisle and window seats and felt extremely cramped. In the aisle seat, if the stewardess was heavy, it was impossible to pass, and she would knock my arm shoulder and thigh every time she went by. If I can avoid it, I will not be flying this airline again.

We never had an experience they canceled the flight and they did not offer us an alternative flight. I had to book one on my own expense. They offered us food voucher and we could not use them at the airport it kept saying not attached to an existing flight. The people at the counter were rude and cold and they did not care about our situation

It took 30 minutes to check in with the Westjet rep. They didn’t have enough seats and she needed to make a call… I am always “randomly” selected to be checked at security. Their “randomly “ selection system may need some updating. They treat people like criminals. It is not appropriate behavior.

Get our, as a group, skis on time to their destination. Have more attendants checking people in. There was only one. The line was a block long :( . Also flight change with 5-hour delay

Found the seats very crowded—too close together ! And waited a long time for our luggage All staff at both ends were excellent!!!

Flight left on time. Crew was polite and helpful. Flight arrived early at destination. Had some trouble with in-flight entertainment system (not built in to seat-back) but found a work-around. Good experience.

As usual, terrible. Delayed flight, missed connection and wasted hours at the airport. The only reason I use this airline is because of limited options.

My flight got delayed 5 times and then got cancelled eventually, I had to get a hotel and uber and pay for food for an extra night without any plans. It was a horrible experience, instead of Air Canada, I was flying with United .

I had a nice flight with free wifi. So I was able to message family members and stream music during my flight, which made the trip go by fast. I also enjoyed flying on there Airbus A220. The plane looked very new and it also got up to speed fast down the runway and didn't need much runway to get airborne.

nothing exceptional and like other airlines food becoming smaller in size...

Lynda was rude and unhelpful. We asked for tea wiht a slice of lemon. She served us Coffee instead. When we spoke to her she made it seem as if we were lying. I asked if she would like to taste it and see - her reply was I don’t need to be rude. After this incident we were treated with subpar service for all beverages and food items after. We’re were purposely left out when they did garbage collection.

They lost my checked in luggage, why do I pay for my cargo not arriving at the same destination as me?

Overall good experience. The flight from Toronto to Denver does not have entertainment - movies to watch.

Not enough electronic outlets for charging in the Air Canada waiting to board area but the Most important thing….the plane was booked to only 40% capacity and my row of 2 other seats were empty. My row happened to be one of the few rows that did NOT have raising arm rests. The flight attendant made effort to seat me in a different row. I needed wheelchair assistance due to a cyst on my knee and struggled to move from seat to seat to get to the row. Those 2 empty seats tormented me the entire 15+ hour flight as I had to be upright the entire flight and was not able to elevate my knee. Lots of other passengers were laying down due to the arm rest being able to retract. It is a shame that he couldn’t be gracious and find a row that I could move to.

Crew was pleasant and efficient. The speaker system for instructions was hard to understand

It was good service. The very low economic seats where not comfortable

It was very good, good food good stuff, The toilets were a little stinky.

There is need to introduce HOME COUNTRY of Departure Meals

They gave us chocolates twice (for whoever would like an extra chocolate - kids did!). I asked for an extra water, and I was given one. Crew was very friendly!

The flight was delayed by an hour. Made the connection uncomfortably tight.

Service was bad and food they told us they only had pasta very rude

The row of seats were so cramped it was difficult to get in and out of your seat. I even upgraded. A long flight and sad accommodations 😵‍💫 the shorter flight was very comfortable and the seating was spacious

They delayed my flight from Toronto Pearson for one hour and Frankfurt to Abuja for 2HRS, So sad

Excellent once on board. Security staff at Johannesburg rude and aggressive.

I bought a ticket and paid for for our luggage but I had to pay for my luggage again. I’m so disappointed! We had a 30 min delay and because of that we missed our connecting flight and were told that we would be on the next flight (9am flight ) but we were landed we were booked at 12pm flight. I had a little baby w me, it was very stressful. I begged to leave at 10 am at least. I was emailed that we get a voucher but they didn’t work when we were at a breakfast store. I’ve been always happy w Lufthansa but this time was awful.

Flights delayed, and not communicated to the level I accustomed to by other airlines. The crew seems to be hating their job and it shows. It costs you nothing to smile and be a bit more friendlier. Also, no jet bridge, passengers have to use stairs, which is hard for my elderly parents. What's the point of ordering wheelchairs?

One of the stewardess was really rude to a customer right near me. I ordered water and was given sparkling water which kind of surprised me as I've always been given still water but I didn't say anything. The lady after me ordered water as well and when she saw it was sparking water, she stopped the stewardess who then said very curtly "You could have told me sooner." Whoa...that was rude! Later this same customer had some liquid spilled on her as the same stewardess handed a drink to the person sitting next to her. I know it wasn't intentional, but it was rather strange. It was very hard to navigate how to get through the Frankfurt airport to our connecting flight. No one told us you'd have to go through security again so it was rather confusing as we didn't have a boarding pass. Luckily we were able to get necessary papers and get to our flight. Sadly, my luggage did not make it out of Frankfurt though.

Quick easy flight, checked my bag and was told to pick it up in LAX but my bag stayed in Frankfurt. I am tracking it with an air tag. I filed a complaint with Alaska Airlines at my last stop in SJC.

For context: 10 hour flight FRA-YVR. Newer A330 Neo plane. Crew were amazing - friendly and efficient. The plane is newer with great overhead space. My main issue is that the Premium Econ cabin is inferior compared with other airlines. Cute amenity kit (a plus). Food was fine, though I’d like to see more wine selection beyond 1 red and 1 white. But, seats aren’t as comfortable, and all Prem Econ and Econ passengers share only 4 washrooms. Washrooms in business are off limits. In addition, Condor charges for seat selection in Prem Econ. Ridiculous on a $1500 one-way ticket. Prem Econ configuration is 2, 4 and 2, and Condor put me and my partner into 2 middle seats in the group of 4 seats, meaning we’d have a single person to our left and to our right. Again, ridiculous. A kind airport agent was able to give us 2 seats in first (and exit) row of Prem Econ but these had no footrests. I wouldn’t rush back to Premium Economy on Condor.

The crew was friendly, but the comfort of the plane and the food definitely had room for improvement.

The cabin staff was very friendly and attentive. The plane was modern and fairly quiet in flight. The video screens are large and of high quality, and I liked that the documentary movie "Anselm" was available for watching.

The flight from Saskatoon to Calgary was canceled by WestJet due to the airline strike. Condor, as the main operator, did not inform us. We found out that information just when we arrived at Saskatoon airport. Fortunately, we had enough time to drive to Calgary airport and catch the flight to Frankfurt. We couldn’t claim compensation for the missing flight because nobody takes responsibility for this situation. When we tried to contact BudgetAir, they redirected us to Condor, and Condor redirected us to WestJet. WestJet keeps saying that they are not responsible for the ticket that was bought from a third-party company.

Because of luggage I had to upgrade to premium economy , which was worth it!

Every thing was fine. The food was lack luster especially after leaving from Italy.

Very good except for the screaming 5 year old that was allowed to yell and scream whenever he wanted too! The mom obviously had no concept of “inside voices”!
