My grandfather grew up on the island and I have family still living there. The award-winning seafood shacks and red-sand beaches are like a second home to me. Charlottetown tends to be the jumping-off point for most first-time visitors and seasoned islanders alike – the capital city and “birthplace of Confederation” links the island to Nova Scotia via bridge and ferry. It’s also home to the only public airport on the island. So, in other words, you pretty much can’t get on or off of Prince Edward Island without spending time in Charlottetown. Due to these reasons, the bulk of the big-name and high-end city hotels in Prince Edward Island are in and around Charlottetown. Here’s my pick of the best hotels in Charlottetown to consider when visiting.

The Great George in Downtown Charlottetown is a shining example of Atlantic Canadian hospitality and friendliness. One of the best hotels in Charlottetown, I always recommend my out-of-town friends stay here when visiting Prince Edward Island for the first time.

The stunning property offers complimentary coffee, tea, and freshly baked cookies at all times of day (a huge plus in my sugar and caffeine-obsessed books). Meanwhile, the staff goes above and beyond to ensure guests are comfortable and well-oriented in Charlottetown, whether that’s with amenities at the hotel or helping to find a great seafood dinner within walking distance.

This is also a great spot to explore the town on foot. It’s right next door to major attractions like the Province House National Historic Site and the Confederation Landing.

If you’re looking for a boutique-style hotel in the middle of town, consider checking into the Holman Grant Hotel. This property is in Downtown Charlottetown, making it one of the best hotels in Charlottetown for its location.

It’s great for grabbing a scoop of Cow’s ice cream or checking out the Confederation Centre of the Arts. But it’s also a brilliant place for cosying up and enjoying a staycation in the capital.

The property boasts a cool Art Deco-inspired design with excellent city views from pretty much every guestroom. It also has a large indoor swimming pool and hot tub, which is great for doing laps or enjoying a warm soak on a chilly winter day. I also appreciate that this hotel has a decent-sized gym with cardio machines and plenty of free weights.

The Fairholm Boutique Inn is one of the best hotels in Charlottetown, with just three rooms and suites in the discrete historic building. The building was originally constructed in 1838 by early Canadian politician Thomas H. Haviland and served as a private family home for almost 120 years before being converted to a hotel in 1999.

These days the property is well-regarded as a comfortable guesthouse thanks to its stunning restored historic architecture and design, complete with original brick and woodwork.

That rich history extends into modern pop culture too, with famous guests including the likes of Sir Paul McCartney. Note that the suites come with bonus amenities that are well worth looking into, including a private in-room spa and working fireplaces.

The Sydney Boutique Inn & Suites boasts just 18 guestrooms and suites that range from charming micro-sized rooms to lavish suites with views of the Charlottetown Harbor. The unique building features elegant European-inspired architecture that reminds me of a high-end property I once stayed at in Madrid.

Every time I visit the Sydney Boutique Inn & Suites I’m blown away by its layers of sophistication. This is one of the best hotels in Charlottetown if you’re looking for a chic stay in the city.

The downtown property is housed in the former 1857 Notre Dame Convent, but you’d never know it based on the clean lines and plush Art Deco-meets-Hollywood Regency decor. I can’t think of a better place in Charlottetown to sit back in while enjoying a cold glass of Champagne.

The Dundee Arms Inn reminds me of my (very glamorous) grandmother in the best possible way. It’s one of the best boutique hotels in Charlottetown for cosy chic decor. It has a certain old-world charm thanks to the gorgeous wood detailing in the lobby and the rich velour upholstery in the guestrooms and suites.

The property was built back in 1903 and has become a fixture on the Charlottetown skyline. Locals and visitors alike also love the beautiful flower-dotted gazebo that beckons travellers from the front lawn.

The Dundee Arms Inn is set just on the edge of the downtown core, which makes it great for exploring Charlottetown on foot. However, I find it comforting to know you’re not right in the middle of the action, so you can still get a good night’s sleep away from the hustle and bustle.

While it’s true that Charlottetown has its fair share of historic boutique hotels and exclusive inns, the city also has a selection of larger properties that make for an equally comfortable stay. Case in point: the Delta Hotels by Marriott Prince Edward.

This is one of the best hotels in Charlottetown for travellers looking for a no-nonsense, business-friendly property. It also happens to be the only hotel set right on Charlottetown’s scenic harbourfront.

The guestrooms are comfortable and well-appointed with great views of the city. I love the fact the hotel bar is open late and offers a very good selection of local and imported beverages – perfect for a nightcap after a long day. There’s also a decent-sized indoor pool and a gym that has plenty of cardio machines and weights.

Travelling to Charlottetown in peak season can be very expensive, but the Hampton Inn & Suites Charlottetown offers plenty of bang for your buck. You won’t have to make any sacrifices on comfort either, making this one of the best hotels in Charlottetown for travellers on a budget.

Keep in mind that while this property isn’t in the downtown core, it’s near a lot of other attractions in and around Charlottetown. It’s a short drive to Beach Grove Nature Trails and right next door to the Cows Creamery Museum (an institution in Prince Edward Island).

The property also boasts a large indoor swimming pool with floor-to-ceiling windows that look out onto a peaceful forested area, as well as a stylish lobby bar with great cocktails and local beer.

The Hotel on Pownal is your best bet if you want a family-friendly space in the center of downtown. The property boasts just 45 guestrooms and suites with cool amenities like free bicycle rentals and electric vehicle charging stations. I also really like that there are pet-friendly rooms, making this one of the best hotels in Charlottetown for those travelling with furry friends.

Certain rooms and suites are accessible from the outside, similar to a motel, which can be a serious bonus if you need to take those aforementioned pets out for a pee break.

But the best part of this property is the free coffee and tea that’s available any time of the day, as well as the free daily breakfast. There’s also a charming outdoor seating area that makes a great spot to kick back with a glass of wine or local beer after a day of exploring the island.

The Elmwood Heritage Inn is one of the most adorable boutique hotels in Charlottetown. The cosy property dates back to 1889 and is outfitted in old-timey florals, from the wallpaper to the upholstery. There are handmade quilts in each guestroom and beautiful Royal Doulton-inspired dinnerware, which you can enjoy by candlelight at breakfast time.

Many of the guestrooms come with amenities like claw foot bathtubs, fireplaces, mini-fridges, and even separate kitchens and living spaces – so if there’s something particular that you need, it’s worth inquiring when you book.

The Elmwood Heritage Inn is one of the best hotels in Charlottetown if you want something a little out of the way with free parking. It’s less than a mile from the downtown core but feels like checking into a quaint neighborhood spot.

The Quality Inn & Suites Downtown is a standout option for frugal travellers. Stay here and you’ll be within walking distance of downtown without having to splash out on a heritage inn or luxury hotel.

This is one of the best hotels in Charlottetown thanks to its price-to-amenities ratio. It has all the creature comforts you need for a good night’s rest, including beautiful four-poster beds in most rooms, claw foot tubs and hot tubs, and even small kitchenettes in some cases.

The staff are also extremely welcoming and helpful. I also love thatthis property is only about 15 minutes from the airport by car, making it super convenient for early flights.
