Set on the Red River of the North, Grand Forks is a real charmer. Right on the Minnesota–North Dakota border, this is where the cult-favourite movie “Fargo” was filmed. Known for its fur trade history, it’s a fascinating place to explore with plenty of culture. Don’t miss the 890 hectares of natural open space called the Greenway: it’s ideal for bird watching, fishing, picnicking and running with your dog. Don’t miss the 890 hectares of natural open space called the Greenway: it’s ideal for bird watching, fishing, picnicking and running with your dog. Road tripping across the US as much as I do, this is a perfect stop-off point for me. The University of North Dakota in Grand Forks offers cool arts and culture events, as does the North Dakota Museum of Art. If you’re looking for the best hotels in Grand Forks, there’s a great mix of places on offer, from a boutique gem right in the city centre to various well-priced hotels around this little city. Here’s my pick of the best hotels to stay in Grand Forks.

Located very close to the university, this is one of the best hotels in Grand Forks if you need a little extra space. The modern suites are all oversized and offer a small pantry area with a refrigerator, sink and microwave. It’s worth noting the guestrooms on the eastern side, away from the interstate, are quieter.

In terms of handy things this hotel offers, you’ll find a little market downstairs where you can pick up snacks at all hours. I tend to prefer health food snacks, but this was a great option after visiting a few dive bars in the city and needing water and nibbles when I got back.

There’s also a 24-hour on-site fitness centre, a swimming pool and a hot tub. If you’re in town to see a concert at the Alerus Center, this hotel is around three kilometres away.

This simple and unfussy hotel is one block from the University of North Dakota and connected via skywalk to the Aerospace School. It’s one of the best hotels in Grand Forks for visiting both spots, plus they have complimentary parking on-site.

The guestrooms and suites are very well-priced. I highly recommend booking the King Bed Junior Suite (with an extra sofa bed), which has a separate area with a big TV and video games – ideal if you’re travelling with kids.

The on-site Garden Grille and Bar serves pasta and American-style dishes, while the Hilton Hanger is a great spot to grab a drink and meet some fellow travellers. I loved going to the Aerospace School for a tour of the space suit laboratory and trying out their spacecraft simulators. The hotel allows dogs, too, for a fee.

This is one of the best hotels in Grand Forks for business travellers. It offers easy access to the Alerus Center, University of North Dakota and UND Aerospace School, and it’s right off the Interstate 29 and 13 km from Grand Forks Airport (GFK). There’s also a 24-hour business centre on-site.

This unassuming property has a great selection of rooms and suites – my top pick is a One-Bedroom Suite, which has a lovely seating area with a TV.

I love that they offer same-day dry cleaning, and I also appreciated the free breakfast, Wi-Fi and parking. If you need to stay in (because the winter weather up north can be hairy), you’re all set with a heated indoor pool and two whirlpools.

This contemporary property offers exceptional value. Located in East Grand Forks (which in fact is its own town on the Minnesota side, but still part of the greater Grand Forks area), it has a range of simple guestrooms and a few suites.

I love the fact the guestrooms here come with comfortable desks and plush carpets for a quiet place to work. If you want to squeeze in a workout, head to the on-site gym or pool.

There’s a free continental and hot breakfast each day, but for dinner I recommend heading to Up North Pizza Pub. Around 1.5 km away, it serves fantastic poutine pizzas and is a great place to meet locals. Wired Bean Coffee is also a short stroll away for a cappuccino, though the hotel does offer free coffee in the lobby.

Located right off Interstate 29 and only about 15 minutes from Grand Forks Airport, this is a great property that covers all the basics. It’s also one of the best hotels in Grand Forks for families, offering free stays for kids aged 18 and under in the same room as the adults.

Whether you love the complimentary cookies and coffee in the lobby or the free hot breakfast, there’s no denying this spot is great value. If you’re travelling with kids, I highly recommend booking their suite, which includes a king room and a separate room with two single beds.

The hotel also has a pool with a hot tub and a slide and play area for children. I also really appreciated the on-site laundry facilities, which are great for road trippers like me.

This hotel is perfectly located on 32nd Avenue, right next to Columbia Mall, where you can shop to your heart’s content. Or, if you’ve got the kids in tow, you can drive or walk just 2.4 km to the Northern Air Family Fun, a trampoline park with dodgeball and laser tag.

The hotel is simple but newly refreshed with a series of guestrooms and suites. My top pick is a Pool Side King Suite that comes with a small lounge area and a kitchenette with a microwave and fridge.

There’s also a basic gym and an indoor pool. I appreciate the hotel’s 24-hour market pantry that stocks snacks, drinks and last-minute travel essentials (such as the phone charger I picked up there). Plus, the property is super pet-friendly.

This is one of the best hotels in Grand Forks if you’re after a great deal in a pet-friendly spot. Right across from the Alerus Center, where you can watch top bands and shows, the hotel’s in a prime location for popping into town.

There are 91 queen and king rooms with mini-fridges and microwaves for added convenience. When I stayed here with my dog, this made getting her food ready super easy.

The lobby is newly redone and has a fireplace, so it’s a lovely spot for hanging out with friends – or making new ones. If you’re hungry there’s an on-site restaurant and takeaway hotspot, Boss' Pizza and Chicken. The food here is fun Mid-West style and I highly recommend the chicken Cordon Bleu pizza.

This all-suite property is one of the best hotels in Grand Forks if you’re looking for a little extra space. Located right off Interstate 29, it’s perfectly located within 3.5 km of all the city’s main attractions: the Alerus Center, University of North Dakota, Ralph Engelstad Arena and Betty Engelstad Sioux Center.

My favourite room is the very well-priced Studio Suite, which has a full kitchen. If you don’t fancy cooking for yourself in the morning, the hotel also offers a free daily breakfast.

I loved the hotel’s social hour – which runs on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 5:30 pm to 7 pm – where they serve free appetizers and drinks. The hotel is also very focused on being accessible, with an array of suites set up to cater to all needs.

This is a modern and budget-friendly property with cozy rooms and suites located right at the Alerus Center. It’s one of the best hotels in Grand Forks for getting a great night’s sleep.

They give all guests access to their BetterSleep sleep and relaxation app – I loved trying out their soothing meditations, while the bedtime stories for kids are great for families. There’s a range of King or Queen Rooms to choose from, all of which are clean and well-appointed.

In the winter, the indoor pool is a great place to take refuge from the cold winds coming off the Arctic. The hotel also has a great bar where travellers can come together, order a drink and listen to stories from the road.

If you’re after a new place to rest your head, this is one of the best hotels in Grand Forks to book. With zero fuss and a simple contemporary design, the La Quinta Inn & Suites by Wyndham Grand Forks is inexpensive and well-located. It’s less than 10 km from the airports, right off the I-29 highway and a very short walk to the Alerus Center.

All the rooms have little fridges, a microwave and a desk in case you need to work. The hotel takes accessibility seriously, and I love the fact they’re also pet-friendly and have an indoor pool.

If you love a free breakfast, you’ve come to the right place – their Bright Side Breakfast® comes with eggs and waffles, and I can confirm both were delicious.
