But the compact metropolis has gone through something of an urban renaissance over the past few years. The cost of living in Toronto has pushed a lot of young creatives outside of the city limits with many – including a lot of my writer and artist friends – choosing to move to Hamilton for a better quality of life. These days the city has a buzzy and creative vibe, especially in the downtown core, with plenty of standout restaurants, bars, and shops that are well worth the commute from Toronto. Admittedly, Hamilton doesn’t have the same selection of boutique or high-end hotels as neighbouring Toronto, but there are still plenty of great spots to drop your bags on your next visit. Here’s my pick of the best hotels in Hamilton.
The Laundry Rooms Augusta HamiltonThe Laundry Rooms Augusta HamiltonRank #1

The Laundry Rooms is one of my favourite boutique hotels in Hamilton and my go-to spot when I’m in town. The property caters to digital nomads and other young travellers who want somewhere cool and trendy to call home while in town. I particularly love that most rooms have in-suite laundry and kitchenettes that look more like an airy city condo than a tired motel-style kitchen.

I highly recommend checking out the rooftop bar and lounge, which offers awesome views of Hamilton and a great selection of local wine, beer, and sharing plates.

The Laundry Rooms is located in Augusta, just outside of the downtown core – it’s about ten minutes on foot to the best addresses in Downtown Hamilton. But the Augusta neighbourhood also has its fair share of lovely coffee shops and restaurants to explore.

If you’re looking for a downtown property that’ll make it easy to explore the best of Hamilton on foot, this is the place to book. The Sheraton Hamilton Hotel is located right across the street from the Art Gallery of Hamilton and steps from some of the best bars and restaurants in town.

This is also one of the best hotels in Hamilton for those who prioritize fitness while travelling. The property has a beautiful indoor pool with a vaulted glass ceiling (great for doing laps in the winter) and a well-appointed gym that looks out over the pool and benefits from some excellent morning light.

I also really like that this property has floor-to-ceiling windows in most guestrooms and suites, which provide great views of Hamilton from all sides and plenty of natural light.

Homewood Suites by Hilton HamiltonHomewood Suites by Hilton HamiltonRank #3

Homewood Suites by Hilton Hamilton is one of the best hotels in Hamilton for families. The property has a range of well-equipped guestrooms (with the option to combine multiple rooms into a suite) and kitchenettes that include everything you need to cook a delicious meal, including hot plates.

But the best part about this hotel is the complimentary breakfast spread. The breakfast at Homewood Suites by Hilton Hamilton includes everything from bacon and eggs to fresh fruit and croissants. The star of show is the waffle maker. Kids will love ordering fresh Belgian-style waffles - they can eat as many as they like for free.

The hotel dining room is a lovely spot too, with floor-to-ceiling windows that overlook Downtown Hamilton below – I really appreciated that as a way to get oriented before heading out to explore the city.

The Visitors Inn is one of the best hotels in Hamilton if you’re passing through on a road trip. I appreciated the free parking when I stayed here, as well as the easy access to the highway. It may look like your classic roadside hotel from the outside, but inside this property is cosy and comfortable.

The guestrooms are bright and comfortable, and the best ones come with full-sized hot tubs. I also really liked the generously-sized indoor hot tub and swimming pool with lounge chairs.

The hotel has a decent on-site restaurant, The Hungry Traveler, but the best spot is the outdoor patio, which is surprisingly serene given its position next to Highway 403.

The Four Points by Sheraton Hamilton - Stoney Creek is one of the best hotels in Hamilton if you’re looking to be out of the urban hustle and bustle. Set just outside the city, the property is next door to Confederation Park Hamilton and just minutes from Hamilton Beach. Yet it also offers a quick commute to Downtown Hamilton.

The Four Points by Sheraton Hamilton - Stoney Creek is well-suited for solo travellers or small families with multiple different room configurations, including small kitchenettes with microwaves and mini-fridges in most rooms.

The property also has a lovely lobby bar and restaurant with a small outdoor patio space. It’s the perfect spot to unwind with a pint of local beer after a long day of exploring Hamilton Beach and the surrounding area.

Sandman Hotel Hamilton has 209 guestrooms and suites, but it never feels busy or crowded in the lobby or at the indoor pool and hot tub area. It’s about a six-minute drive to Lake Ontario – one of my favourite spots in summer – and the easy access to the highway makes it a great option if you’re overnighting in Hamilton during a road trip.

The rooms are modern and comfortable, and each one has a patio or Juliet balcony so you can enjoy a morning cup of coffee or a glass of wine while admiring the sunset.

The property doesn’t have an on-site restaurant but it’s conveniently located right next to a Denny’s and a Moxie’s, so you’ve got your hearty breakfast and tasty bistro-style dinner covered without having to jump in the car.

The Staybridge Suites Hamilton - Downtown is a great option if you’re travelling on a budget. Set right in the middle of the city, it’s central enough that you don’t need to touch the car for the whole trip (a major bonus in my books).

I also love the beautiful views of the city skyline you get from most of the suites here. You’ll get the same gorgeous vistas from the private patios. There’s an indoor pool, a 24/7 fitness centre (great for squeezing in a late-night workout), and coin-operated laundry machines in the building for those mid-trip loads.

The Staybridge Suites Hamilton - Downtown also offers free breakfast, as well as a weekday evening reception where guests can enjoy free beer and wine as well as a light dinner – a great wallet-friendly way to mingle with other travellers.

If you’re looking for a quiet spot to rest your head, this TownePlace Suites is the place to book. That’s not to say this property is all that far out of town – it’s only a short drive to Downtown Hamilton and about nine km from John C. Munro Hamilton International Airport. It’s also close to the Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum and the Chippewa Creek Golf Course, if you fancy working on your swing.

The guestrooms all have fully-equipped kitchens – ideal if you’re looking to cook your own meals while travelling. But it’s also worth noting that every stay comes with a free hot breakfast buffet, which is one of the best continental breakfasts I’ve seen in a while. There are plenty of vegetarian options available alongside waffles, bagels, fresh fruit, and your classic bacon and eggs.

This is one of the best hotels in Hamilton for travellers looking for a reliable place to stay in the downtown core. This centrally located property is just steps from Victoria Park, so it’s easy to fit in a leafy stroll before you start your day.

The Hampton Inn by Hilton Hamilton is also just around the corner from all the best bars and restaurants on King Street West. The property is pet-friendly, with rooms specifically designated for animals, so it’s one of the best hotels in Hamilton for those travelling with furry friends.

I appreciated the colourful lounge area where guests can enjoy a coffee or get some work done (great for digital nomads like me). There’s also a well-appointed 24-hour fitness area and an indoor pool that’s large enough to comfortably swim laps in.

The Pearle Hotel & Spa is just across the water on the Burlington side. But ask any hotel aficionado and they’ll tell you this is one of the best hotels in Hamilton and the surrounding area for a truly luxurious experience.

The stunning property sits directly on Lake Ontario and offers gorgeous views of the water thanks to the floor-to-ceiling windows in every guestroom and suite. Even if you don’t check into the Pearle, it’s worth making a reservation at the on-site Isabelle Restaurant and Lounge, which offers creative takes on Mediterranean and modern Californian cuisine.

But for me, the best part of this property is the Pearle Spa. It has its own traditional Turkish hammam steam room and an indoor pool that looks directly onto Lake Ontario for the most spellbinding of views while swimming laps.
