I’ve been visiting for years, and the hotel scene is enjoying a real moment, with newer openings sitting alongside all-time classics. The city's relatively small size means that wherever you choose to stay, you'll be close to the biggest sites and attractions, from the iconic Tivoli Gardens or the harbour baths of Islands Brygge. The best hotels in Copenhagen are the perfect showcase for effortless Danish design. You can find historic wonders for a blow-the-budget stay or affordable design-led options that are a cut above their competitors outside Scandinavia. Here are my top 10 picks for where to stay in Copenhagen.

Zoku’s lobby is on its top floor, offering sprawling city views via an adjacent roof terrace and a verdant greenhouse. It's unique and makes entering the hotel feel special to boot.

Based in the lively Orestad neighborhood, the focus at Zoku is on business travellers. You’ll find striking, spacious and sleekly designed Lofts, featuring mezzanine beds that open out onto kitchens and desks. There’s even a co-working space on the rooftop, with a “hygge” break to boost your productivity.

Of course, you don’t need to be on the clock to stay at Zoku. Try the hotel’s Living Kitchen, where you can eat simple, fresh Scandi dishes while chatting with the chefs or grab a pizza for lunch before exploring. The nearest Metro station, DR Byan, is just a two-minute walk away.

The NH Collection is one of the best hotels in Copenhagen for luxury lovers, with a classic Danish design and an unrivalled location on the harbour.

My favourite spot here is Roof, a bar that opens from April to September and looks right out on the water. It’s not so much the view as the one-of-a-kind cocktail menu that makes this the place to be once summer hits. The Pretty Pingo, inspired by Copenhagen’s Vor Frue Kirke, is my top pick.

You can also rent bikes, though you won’t need them for visiting the biggest attractions in town, seeing as they’re all so close. You’ll be wowed by Danish design at the Dansk Arkitektur Centre, two minutes away by foot. Meanwhile, the picturesque Christianshavn Canal is just three minutes away.

Thriving Vesterbro is home to one of the best boutique hotels in Copenhagen. Coco is found within a typical Danish apartment building, with tall windows and high ceilings. The rooms are places of simplicity and comfort—think clean lines, solid colour palettes, sleek furniture and comfortable beds tucked away within the eaves.

I love how Coco takes on a Parisian style without being cliche. The blue and white awnings of Coco Bar à Vin downstairs give way to a space for sipping an espresso or something stronger come the evening, seamlessly combining French and Danish cool.

If you love eating out, then Coco’s location, close to the French delights found at Les Trois Cochons, the Meatpacking District’s rightly lauded Kødbyens Fiskebar, and the dining spots on Vesterbrogade, make it an absolute must stay.

If you’re looking to save some cash, the adults-only Cityhub is one of the best hotels in Copenhagen to book. It’s centrally located in Vesterbro too, which means you’ll have plenty of food options nearby.

I especially love how Cityhub has teamed up with nearby Grød to offer a discounted breakfast. Think delicious oatmeal with seasonal berries and super strong coffee. If you’re a beer aficionado, Mikkeller Bar’s bright white cellar serves local brews to fuel your night out.

The clever rooms, known as hubs, are a take on the classic Japanese capsule hotel, but with double beds and space to stash your luggage. Slip on your kimono (supplied for each guest) and head to the luxurious, spa-like bathrooms, where you can clean up using Rituals products.

It’s easy to see why the Admiral is one of the best hotels in Copenhagen. From its gorgeous waterfront location to its proximity to the Amalienborg Palace, this is somewhere history buffs can feel the past in the present.

Dating back to 1787, when it was first built as a pair of grain stores, the Admiral Copenhagen feels grounded in the Copenhagen of old. Its exposed beams and original brickwork take you back in time, while its cosy beds and modern Scandi finishes make it feel properly up to date.

If you breathe for culture, the Royal Danish Playhouse is only three minutes away by foot. I highly recommend the much-loved Vietnamese restaurant District Tonkin, just a seven-minute walk from the front door, which is perfect for a feast after a morning spent taking in the art and history of the Palace.

All of the best hotels in Copenhagen are rooted in their local neighbourhoods, reflecting the surrounding scene and making guests feel as if they’re part of it. Nowhere does this better than 71 Nyhaven. Nyhaven has become a byword for Copenhagen, its 16th-century architecture right on the canal making it a must-visit for tourists.

71 Nyhaven was once a waterside warehouse, but instead of feeling like a time capsule, it shows off original features, such as its rounded windows and shutters, and couples them with understated finishes.

You can rent a bike from reception and ride 10 minutes along the canal to Islands Brygge, Copenhagen’s incredible harbour baths. It’s the ideal way to cool off during the warmer months.

Grand Joanne is one of the best hotels in Copenhagen for those who like the finer things in life. Its name is a giveaway, as are its tasteful rooms, which opt for a more opulent and less pared-back aesthetic than many Copenhagen hotels.

It isn’t just about the plush interiors. Located just across Reventlowsgade from Copenhagen Central Station and right by the hip Meatpacking District, the Joanne is perfectly placed for however you want to experience Copenhagen. If you’ve come to eat and drink, you can be sipping wine at Paté Paté within minutes. If you’re here for history and culture, the Tivoli Gardens are just outside the front door.

But the spot that I adore is the rooftop, with its twice weekly DJ sets throughout summer and Sunday Sessions, where you can devour local pastries and enjoy a mimosa. Ideal if you’ve had a hectic few days exploring the city.

The citizenM brand has won plaudits for its compact rooms that don’t compromise on comfort. There’s space for a double bed, a small bathroom and even a TV. Located right in the heart of the action on Rådhuspladsen, this is a colourful and expansive brute of a building that’s impossible to miss.

This is one of the best hotels in Copenhagen for location. You can walk to the Tivoli Gardens in five minutes; hop on the Metro at Vesterport and be at the National Gallery in less than 15 minutes; or stroll to the alternative world of Christiania in 30 minutes, stopping at Islands Brygge. It makes seeing the city at a leisurely pace a breeze.

25hours has made a name for itself throughout Europe thanks to its amazing hotels that offer something for everyone without cutting corners. The 25hours Hotel Indre By is one of the best hotels in Copenhagen because it does this with aplomb, all the while offering something that stands out from the Scandi crowd.

Rooms range from Medium Singles, which feature superb rain showers and desks, right through to Gigantic rooms, which have space for three guests, freestanding baths and views of neighbouring Trinitatis Church. All of this with quirky design-led interiors in a stunning old porcelain factory.

There’s also a rooftop sauna and modern Israeli food available from the Neni restaurant downstairs.

This is one of the best hotels in Copenhagen if you are looking for a boutique stay in the heart of the city. The fact there’s been a hotel on this site since 1851 means the Hotel Skt Annæ’s owners aren’t wrong when they say they’re all about authenticity.

I love the colour palette of blacks, whites and greys, which lend the hotel a seriously sleek Scandi feel. Guestrooms range from compact single rooms and spacious suites right up to apartments that sleep up to four people, complete with fully equipped kitchens, living areas and cosy sofas.

The Shrimp is the hotel’s in-house restaurant, set within a towering atrium that is dramatic yet welcoming. Oysters, lobster and caviar lead the way—this is a place to splash out, after all. The hospitality is first class, with waiters impressively knowledgeable about the food and happy to share tips on other local spots to check out once you’ve eaten.
