Seafarers International House

Tucked away in the Union Square neighborhood of New York City, Seafarers International House is a harbor of hospitality, conveniently located one block away from major subway lines. Rooms are extended to seafarers, international and domestic travelers, and church groups, as well as students and clergy. The rooms are simple, clean, safe, and available for short stays at a modest cost with helpful staff available 24 hours a day, seven days per week.

Though Seafarers International House’s Nordgren Chapel is a ministry of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, all religions and denominations are welcome to stay. Rooms are clean and tidy with a touch of personal charm and the hotel features amenities such as air conditioning, makeup service, cable television, telephone, free WiFi in public spaces, coffee, laundry service, private or shared bathrooms, ice and vending machines, and computers available for use. All beds are single beds, with a maximum room occupancy of two people.

Seafarers International House was founded in 1873 by the Augustana Lutheran Church as a mission to Swedish seafaring people in the Port of New York. Shortly thereafter, its prime goal was to serve as a mission to both Swedish seafarers immigrants. In 1987, Seafarers International House became an affiliated mission of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. By staying here, the room revenue from each guest’s stay helps to support their mission of caring for seafarers and migrants who are often at sea for months and thereby put at risk of depression, abuse, piracy, and accidents.
