This is reflected in the best hotels in Sacramento, with everything on offer from renovated historic landmarks with quirky interiors to resort-style hotels offering plenty of amenities. Sacramento is one of my favourite underrated places for a weekend getaway in California for a number of reasons. Most of the accommodation options are in downtown and midtown, within easy access to all the things to see and do in the leafy capital of the Golden State, including museums, galleries, restaurants, and boutiques. The well-known farm-to-table dining scene of the city is prevalent in the hotel scene, with most offering world class restaurants serving local ingredients. Whether you’re visiting for business or a romantic weekend away, this is my top list of hotels in the area.

Located conveniently across from the stunning 40-acre California State Capitol Park, the Hyatt Regency is one of the best luxury hotels in Sacramento. Within walking distance to shopping malls, restaurants, and the Old Sacramento Waterfront, guests can explore the city with ease.

At the base of the hotel, the expansive resort-style pool is heated year-round, with plenty of shady lounges to relax. There are literally hundreds of rooms to choose from here, but all boast a view, either of the downtown skyline or the iconic State Capitol from the large windows. While the upgraded suites offer lounge and dining areas and an outdoor terrace.

Guests are also spoilt for dining options. My favourite is the award-winning Dawsons’ Steakhouse offering upscale, farm to fork cuisine. If you get thirsty, the lobby bar, Amourath 1819, serves handcrafted cocktails and premium spirits along with shareable food.

The Citizen Hotel is a recently renovated hotel dating back to 1925 in downtown Sacramento, and a gem for travellers who appreciate a good historic renovation.

Focusing on classic elegance with an arty twist, the rooms and suites were curated by George Selland. A 1900s glam style and interesting statement art pieces make each room different from the next. Admire the views over the Capitol and surrounding cityscape from your private room after a day exploring the city.

However, it’s essential to savour a meal at the Grange Restaurant and Bar, featured in the latest Michelin Guide. Serving a seasonal menu with the freshest ingredients from the local area plus a wide selection of the best wines, the dining experience helps The Citizen Hotel stand out from the rest.

The Fort Sutter Sacramento Tapestry Collection by Hilton is a charming yet humble boutique hotel located near Sacramento’s historic quarter. If you don’t mind the slightly dated decor, I think it’s great for its close proximity to some of Sacramento’s natural attractions, including Tiscornia Park and the American River Parkway Trail. As a bonus, it’s also a 5-minute walk to the SMUD Museum of Science and Curiosity.

The 133 guestrooms and suites are some of Sacramento's more spacious accommodation options, each with a relaxing and casual vibe. Favoured by conference goers, this hotel offers the convenience of free parking, Wi-Fi, and airport shuttle service, ensuring a hassle-free experience from the moment you come and go. With more than 600 square metres of meeting space, it also is an ideal spot for those hosting group events.

The Kimptons Sawyer Hotel is in the heart of downtown Sacramento surrounded by the city’s best galleries, malls, and restaurants. In my opinion, this makes it one of the best places to bed down for travellers looking to soak up all that Sacramento has to offer.

The hotel’s interior takes inspiration from the area’s natural beauty and historical charm with plenty of earthy tones and natural patterns from brown leather couches to smooth grey tiling. The specialty suites offer more sophisticated comfort, with soaking tubs and private balconies.

As one of the best hotels to stay in Sacramento, the amenities are unmatched, offering a rooftop pool terrace that’s home to the Revival Bar, a fully equipped fitness centre, and a beauty salon and spa. If you can drag yourself away from the buzzing Revival Bar, the contemporary steakhouse, Echo & Rig, offers a high-end take on local comfort food.

Escape the bustle of downtown with a stay at The Westin Sacramento, nestled along the serene riverside. Located near the Land Park neighbourhood, the hotel offers a blend of luxury and comfort with everything you’ll need for a weekend away.

If it’s a special occasion I recommend splurging on one of the suites with a balcony, fireplace, and tub in the marble bathroom. Also, the hotel is amenities-heavy with a 24-hour gym, heated outdoor pool, and onsite spa centre for guests.

Plus, Scott’s Seafood on the River has been recognized as one of the best seafood restaurants in town, offering fresh and sustainable fish and other seafood on the menu. For those looking for an understated yet comfortable stay, this is one of the best hotels in Sacramento.

Situated in the historic Sutter District of Midtown, Hyatt House has transformed the Eastern Star Hall building into one of the top-rated hotels in Sacramento. This striking Romanesque Revival-style building showcases several styles from the 1920s, including exposed brick walls, open fireplaces, custom iron staircases, and dark timber furnishings.

The 128 rooms and suites are simpler and more modern in design than expected, with some offering views of the Fort State Historic Park, and private patios with lounges.

Maintaining some of the building’s heritage, my favourite spot is the renovated library lounge where you can relax or sit back in the velvet seats at the Star Lounge bar. This is one of the best hotels in Sacramento for those looking to explore the eclectic mix of boutiques, galleries, and music of Midtown.

For a more intimate stay, the Inn & Spa in Parkside is one of the best boutique hotels in Sacramento. This hotel offers just 12 uniquely furnished suites in downtown Sacramento, some with a private tub, fireplace, balcony, and full kitchen for a homey stay.

I recommend it for a romantic getaway, with a rejuvenating spa offering massages, facials, and body wraps, plus the outdoor pool heated all year round. A complimentary welcome drink is offered at the Mansion Bar, or you can also purchase a local bottle of wine to enjoy in your own private setting. Breakfast is available to guests, or you’ll find plenty of wonderful restaurants within walking distance.

A perfect choice for those looking to indulge in some pampering, this is one of the best hotels in Sacramento with a focus on relaxation.

The Inn Off Capitol Park is the perfect little retreat in downtown. Just steps from the California State Capitol, it sits in a quiet, tree-lined street away from the bustling traffic, but still within walking distance of many restaurants, bars, and shops.

The newly renovated rooms are decorated in bright whites and greys along with classical art, keeping things simple yet elegant. It’s one of the best hotels in Sacramento for those visiting on business, with personal work desks in each room, access to a business centre and meeting rooms for private gatherings.

I prefer it as a place to unwind, thanks to its cozy courtyard to relax in, or spend some time moving your body in the exercise room. With bars and restaurants just steps from the door, there are plenty of dining options nearby to choose from.

Housed inside a historic 10-storey building originally built in 1914, The Exchange Sacramento is part of the exclusive Curio Collection of the Hilton brand. What was once the tallest building west of the Mississippi has been transformed into one of the best fancy hotels in Sacramento, retaining much of its heritage along with modern furnishings.

The 100 rooms offer city views, along with bright splashes of colour from the décor, retro flooring and large, plush beds. While the hotel is just minutes from fantastic restaurants and bars at the Old Sacramento Waterfront, scheduling a meal at the onsite restaurant, Willow, is a must, and a place I would dine even as a non-guest.

The exquisite Southern Italian dining experience serves house-made pasta, seafood, and game proteins. The Exchange is also one of the best hotels in Sacramento for those looking to host an event, with spaces available for conferences, weddings, parties, or other gatherings.

As one of Sacramento’s most historic hotel complexes, Vizcaya is a unique place to stay in the city. The designated historical landmark is a full-service event venue that offers the perfect place to host a wedding or other occasion.

One of my favourite facts is that this Victorian mansion dates back to 1889. Now it offers just eight sleeping quarters renovated for complete luxury, with soaking tubs, decorative fireplaces, antique furniture, and a complimentary breakfast. The mansion is surrounded by beautifully landscaped gardens and the Pavilion offers a focal point of the events.

Located just outside of midtown, it’s one of the best hotels in Sacramento if you want to stay outside of the bustling city centre but remain close enough to explore the main sights.
